Wie sieht die ideale Frau aus? Wie sollte sie lieben, fühlen, sein? Über diese Fragen zerbrachen sich im Mittelalter vor allem Männer den Kopf. Attraktiv wie die mythische Helena von Troja wünschten sich die etablierten Denker die Frauen. Zugleich verspotteten sie »Evas Töchter« als übersexualisierte Sünderinnen – unersättlich und von Natur aus schwach.
Die Historikerin Eleanor Janega stellt diesen männlichen Theorien reale Frauen gegenüber – berühmte wie Eleonore von Aquitanien und Hildegard von Bingen, aber auch solche, deren Leben in den Quellen verborgen blieben. Wir erfahren, wie die Frauen dieser Zeit wirklich lebten: Sie waren nicht nur Mütter, sondern auch fleißige Bäuerinnen, Bierbrauerinnen, Textilarbeiterinnen, Künstlerinnen, Kunsthandwerkerinnen. Als solche ebneten sie den Weg für neue Ideen über die Natur, den Intellekt und die Fähigkeiten von Frauen.
Die ideale Frau zeigt, wie mittelalterliche Vorstellungen von Weiblichkeit entstanden und fragt, wie es sein kann, dass sie ihre Wirksamkeit bis heute nicht verloren haben. Wollen wir uns nicht endlich von den einengenden Geschlechterklischees befreien?
Die Autorin
Dr. Eleanor Janega lehrt mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche Geschichte an der London School of Economics. Ihre Forschung konzentriert sich auf Sozialgeschichte mit den Schwerpunkten Sexualität, Propaganda und apokalyptisches Denken im Spätmittelalter. Sie betreibt den erfolgreichen Blog Going Medival und lebt in London.
