Polarlichter – im Rausch der Farben. Von Petra Fritz

Wenn Polarlichter am Himmel tanzen, ist es immer ein Fest, ein Feuerwerk der Farben. Wie himmlische Boten ziehen sie ihre Kreise, Lichtbänder, tauchen mal hier, mal da auf, bilden wehende Vorhänge oder lassen den Nachthimmel über längere Zeit erglühen. Es gibt sie vorwiegend in den Farben neongrün, manchmal erscheinen sie aber auch in orange oder wie lila-rot flammende Feuerwalzen.

Im ersten Moment glaubt man seinen Augen nicht zu trauen, sieht zweimal hin. Ich habe dieses Lichtspektakel schon einmal aus dem Flugzeug heraus erlebt, nämlich kurz vor Weihnachten im Landeanflug auf Rovaniemi. Erst dachte ich, es handele sich um eine Reflexion des Positionslichtes am Flügel, dann aber war der Schein plötzlich überall.

In Kiruna in Nord-Schweden konnte ich es zwei Jahre später noch einmal vom Boden aus sehen. Die finnische Kleinstadt Rovaniemi liegt ebenso wie Kiruna nördlich des Polarkreises und ist auch als Hauptstadt des Weihnachtsmannes bekannt. Hier leben u.a. die berühmten Schlittenkollegen von „Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer“. Tausende Kinder schreiben Santa jährlich aus der ganzen Welt und in vielen Sprachen. Die Wichtel und Weihnachtselfen des „Joulupukki“ sind stets auf’s Neue bemüht, alle diese Briefe zu beantworten. Man kann ihn in seiner zauberhaften Winter-Residenz, die keineswegs ein kitschiges Disneyland ist, auch persönlich besuchen.

Oft ist aber nicht nur von Nord-, sondern auch von Südlichtern die Rede, was im Grunde dasselbe ist. Erscheinen sie um den Südpol, nennt man sie Aurora australis, hier in den nördlichen Breiten um den Nordpol Aurora borealis. Besonders schön sehen kann man sie auch vom Wasser aus, wenn man z.B. mit einem Schiff entlang der Küste von Norwegen unterwegs ist. In den Fjorden und bei glatter See spiegelt sich das Phänomen auch auf der Wasseroberfläche.

Wie genau entstehen Polarlichter?

Manche Forscher bezeichnen sie als eine Art „Luftkuss“, den die Sonne in Richtung Erde sendet und dort in Form von bunten Lichtern am Himmel sichtbar werden lässt. Physikalisch passiert dabei Folgendes: Die Sonne stößt einen sogenannten Sonnenwind (oder auch mal Sonnensturm) voller energiegeladenen Teilchen, d.h. Elektronen, Protonen und ein wenig Helium, aus. Dieser Sonnenwind benötigt rund 18 Stunden, bis er das Magnetfeld der Erde erreicht (Magnetosphäre). Unmittelbar bis zur Erdoberfläche gelangen können die Teilchen nicht, weil sie hier auf Magnetfeldlinien treffen, die nach Norden ausgerichtet sind.

Durch dieses Aufeinandertreffen wirkt die sog. Lorentzkraft, die die elektrisch geladenen Teilchen fast senkrecht zu ihrer ursprünglichen Bahn ablenkt. Die Sonnenwindteilchen werden also um die Magnetosphäre herumgeleitet. Wenn sich die energiegeladenen Teilchen dann mit erdeignen Atomen verbinden, entstehen die Nordlichter. Meist sind sie grünlich. Je nach Grad der Sauerstoffverbindung bzw. je höher sie in der Atmosphäre auftreffen, ändert sich das Farbspektrum und rötliche Töne dominieren. Zur optimalen Sichtung benötigt man in der Regel einen dunklen, klaren Himmel, denn diese Reaktion findet in gut 100 Kilometern Höhe statt, also weit oberhalb der Wolkendecke.

Leider kann man Polarlichter – im Gegensatz zu ihren kleinen „Verwandten“, den Sternschuppen – nicht überall sehen, denn das Magnetfeld der Erde ist nicht kreisrund, sondern gleicht eher einem Kürbis mit Öffnungen oben und unten aus. Die Elektronen werden aufgrund ihrer magnetischen Ladung besonders von diesen Öffnungen angezogen und von den Magnetfeldlinien zu den Polen gelenkt. Dort kollidieren sie dann mit den erdeignen Atomen. Interessanterweise sind die Polarlichter an beiden Enden der Welt zur gleichen Zeit sichtbar. Wenn also in Norwegen Nordlichter zu sehen sind, verfärbt sich gleichzeitig der Himmel über dem Südpol.

Trotz all dieser Erkenntnisse ist die Aurora bis heute nicht komplett erforscht. Man kann ihr Auftreten bis dato beispielsweise nicht sicher voraussagen. Zudem kann die Aurora (benannt nach der Göttin der Morgenröte) auf der Erde maßgebliche Störungen bei technischen Systemen hervorrufen, sowie Stromausfälle verursachen.

Verständlicherweise hatten viele Menschen früher auch Angst oder zumindest Respekt vor diesem Naturphänomen und insbesondere im Mittelalter galten rötliche Färbungen als Prophezeiung für Krieg und Blutvergießen. Bei den Sami herrscht bis heute der (Aber-)glaube, dass man über das Nordlicht nur im Dunklen sprechen dürfe, weil es die umherziehenden Seelen der Toten seien. Fotos und Videos zeigen, wie grandios es aussieht, wenn die überschüssige Energie der Sonne auf das Magnetfeld der Erde trifft.

Einer der ersten Forscher der Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts die Entstehung von Nordlichtern erforschte, war der norwegische Physiker Kristian Birkeland. Heute versucht man an der Universität Tromso Nordlichter künstlich zu erzeugen, um ihrem Wesen so noch näher zu kommen.

Hier findet man in der Zeit von Oktober bis Februar weltweit die besten Polarlicht-Spots:

ISLAND – Im Land der heißen Quellen und Wasserfälle kann man Polarlichter statistisch am häufigsten sehen. Dort gibt es sogar einen offiziellen Feen-Beauftragten.
ALASKA – Von Anchorage aus starten viele (Tages)Touren. Dabei gilt das Eagle-River Nature Center als einer der besten Plätze.
KANADA – Hier bieten sich zum Spotting der Jasper Nationalpark und der Wood-Buffalo Nationalpark an, da diese als sog. Lichtschutzgebiete gelten. Ebenso in den North-West Territories nahe Yellow Knife, wo ein Teil der hier gezeigten Bilder und Video Clips entstand. Hier herrschen schon mal Wintertemperaturen um die -30 Grad Celsius.
SCHWEDEN – Kiruna oder Lulea bieten Lappland-Feeling pur. Tagsüber im Hundeschlitten oder Schneemobile dahingleiten, abends Elchwurst oder Rentier-Burger am Lagerfeuer unterm Polarlicht-Himmel. Mein Tipp: der kleine Ort Abisco nahe der ESA-Station „ESRANGE“, wo auch hin und wieder Wettersatelliten in’s All geschossen werden.
NORWEGEN – Tromso gilt als das Tor zur Arktis. Häufiger kann man dort auch Robben und Wale sehen; und ein Aurora-Erlebnis-Camp gibt es natürlich auch.
SPITZBERGEN – (Svalbard) Die Hauptstadt Longyearbyen hat den „nördlichsten Flughafen der Welt“. Mit etwas Glück kann man Nordlichter hier sogar am Tage sehen.
FINNLAND – Nahe Rovaniemi (Hauptstadt Lapplands) am besten in einem Glas-Iglu unter „dem Sternenhimmel“ schlafen; definitiv ein optimaler Ort um Polarlichter zu sehen.
SCHOTTLAND – Kein Wunder, liegt doch die Isle of Skye auf der Höhe bzw. demselben Breitengrad wie Alaska (!) Je nördlicher man geht, umso größer ist die Chance die „Mirrie Dancers“, wie die Schotten die Aurora nennen, bei ihrem Treiben beobachten zu können
Und selbst in DEUTSCHLAND kann man manchmal schwache Polarlichter erleben. Bis zu 20 Meldungen über Polarlichtsichtungen gibt es pro Jahr.

Für „Warmduscher“ ist Polarlicht-Spotting allerdings nichts, denn i.d.R. hat es nahe des Polarkreises stets sehr frostige Nachttemperaturen. Selbst wenn man heiße Getränke erhält, sind diese im üblichen Becher nach zwei Minuten nicht nur kalt, sondern nach vier bis fünf Minuten bereits gefroren – brrr. Bei der Rückkehr in’s Haus, ist es zum nachhaltigen Aufwärmen meist nicht genug, heiß zu duschen; schnell ist man wieder ausgekühlt. Nachhaltig wohltuender ist es, ein Viertelstündchen in die Sauna zu gehen, die in jedem Haus, Hotel oder gar Zimmer vorhanden ist. Sich dann gemütlich einkuscheln und die zauberhafte Stimmung Revue passieren lassen.

Man könnte über die Polarlichter auch sagen, sie sind ein Adventszauber und Feuerwerk der besonderen Art. In jedem Fall ein grandioses Naturschauspiel, bei dem man sich wie im Weltraum fühlt.

Mit den Engeln in den Himmel steigen, kann man auch in einigen Planetarien wie z.B. in Hamburg. Vor allem kann man besagte Polarlichtreisen hier bequem und warm vom Sessel heraus verfolgen. Ein ganz besonderes Highlight sind dabei die spektakulären Polarlichtaufnahmen aus der ISS. Dank der „4K-Technik“ (Ultra HD) des Projektors fühlt man sich fast schwerelos und glaubt selbst im Spacelab dabei zu sein!

Der moderate Eintritt von 12.- EURO für Erwachsene ist mehr als gut angelegt, zumal vorab wissenswerte Erläuterungen über den Sternenhimmel allgemein erfolgen und man überdies die 40 Meter hohe Aussichtsplattform des ehemaligen Wasserturmes im Stadtpark besuchen
