Wieland Wagner gewährt in diesem Buch einen beeindruckenden Blick hinter die Kulissen des Hofes und zeigt, warum das Kaiserhaus die kulturelle Identität der Nation und zugleich die Widersprüche der japanischen Gesellschaft verkörpert. Dabei lässt er längst vergangene Epochen wieder lebendig werden und zeichnet das Bild eines Landes, das heute – gefangen im Wechselspiel von Fortschritt und Tradition – zutiefst verunsichert in seine Zukunft blickt.
Der Autor
Wieland Wagner, geboren 1959, studierte Geschichte und Germanistik in Freiburg, London und Tokio. Seine Dissertation über Japans frühe Expansionspolitik in Ostasien wurde mit dem Gerhard-Ritter-Preis ausgezeichnet. Von 1990 bis 1993 arbeitete Wagner als Korrespondent für die Nachrichtenagentur Vereinigte Wirtschaftsdienste (VWD) in Tokio. Bis 1995 war er Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Historischen Seminar der Universität Freiburg. Seit 1995 berichtet Wagner für den SPIEGEL aus Asien, bis 2004 zunächst mit Sitz in Tokio, anschließend in Shanghai, ab 2010 in Peking, ab 2012 in Neu-Delhi und von 2014 bis 2018 wieder in Tokio. 2018 erschien »Japan – Abstieg in Würde. Wie ein alterndes Land um seine Zukunft ringt«.
